A friend of mine was recording for the band Thailabor (FB page here). The trio's music ranges from acoustic and rock to ambient. I dig them.
I offered to mix the song he recorded.
The Night (คืนที่ควรจดจำ) is a mid-tempo rock track with a ton of dynamic and texture. There are 7 guitar lines, mostly ambient playing.
How to Deal with Multi-layer Guitars
The first thing I noticed was that there were about 6 lines of guitars, each with 3 input channels (a condenser mic, dynamic, and a DI).
I started with balancing the levels among the 3 input channels until I got the texture that I wanted, without touching the panning or adding any effects and processors.
Then I grouped them in stems/busses -- this is key to help simplify the wet mix stage because now you only have one of each to insert effects or do panning/volume automation.
